Heritage Montgomery is proud to announce its participation in the restoration of the historic Warren site in Martinsburg. Once renovations are complete, the restored one-room schoolhouse will serve as a museum, program space, and community gathering place that honors the legacy of the African American families who built and sustained this community.
In partnership with state and county agencies, Heritage Montgomery helped spearhead efforts to preserve this important site. The Martinsburg Negro School, built in 1886, educated 40 to 50 students in grades one through seven and stands today as one of the few remaining examples of early African American education in Montgomery County.
The Warren site remains a cornerstone of the Martinsburg community, where the church, school, and benefits hall continue to represent the enduring spirit of self-reliance and unity that shaped this historic settlement.
Heritage Montgomery is one of 13 certified heritage areas in Maryland, dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history, culture, and natural resources of Montgomery County. Through partnerships, programs, and events like Heritage Days, Heritage Montgomery connects residents and visitors to the stories and places that define our shared heritage.
