Discovery Day: Trains in Gaithersburg
April 27, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Discover the magic of trains at the Gaithersburg Community Museum’s Train Day. Visitors are invited to celebrate Gaithersburg’s long and storied history with the railroad. Enjoy a N-Gauge model train display presented by BANTRAK members, explore vintage rail cars, and participate in train-related activities. In the museum, have fun in the hands-on learning centers and shop for train-themed items. With any luck visitors can also enjoy the sights and sounds of the actual CSX and AMTRAK trains that frequently rumble past the Museum.
At 3:00 Peter Liebhold, curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, will talk about the Transcontinental Railroad which opened on May 10, 1869. This talk is appropriate for ages 12 and up.
This is a drop-in program for audiences of all ages. Admission is free, but a donation to help cover the cost of materials is appreciated. A separate Train Day + Talk ticket is required to attend the talk as seating is limited.
