SUMMARY:MoCo Underground Writers Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Sandy Spring Museum celebrates the power of the written word with the MoCo Underground Writers Showcase\, where featured writers share original stories\, poetry\, and essays aloud in front of a live audience. With a special focus on local independent authors\, MoCo Underground welcomes writers from all backgrounds and levels of experience\, from grizzled veterans with hundreds of publishing credits to never-before-published novices just beginning to find their voices. \n\nIf you are interested in reading your work at a future showcase\, please email MoCoUnderground@gmail.com with a 2\,000 word (max) writing sample and short bio. Not a writer? You are still welcome to attend the showcase to enjoy recent works from talented local writers. \n\n\nMoCo Underground Writers Showcase is a bi-monthly public event co-led by writers Pierre-Alain Auroux and Laura Sturza. \n\n\nPierre-Alain Auroux (Host) is a writer originally from Paris\, France. His work has appeared in scientific journals. He curates and facilitates MoCo Underground\, a community reading series for emerging and established writers. He lives in Hyattsville\, MD\, where he is a subject matter expert for high-risk/high-pay-off cutting-edge research programs. He is not sure whether his reading informs his scientific ideas or his ideas spark his writing: so much fun either way! \n\n\nLaura Sturza (Assistant Host) has work appearing in publications including The New York TImes\, The Washington Post\, Boston Globe\, The LA Times\, AARP\, Lunch Ticket\, Oldster\, Washington Writers’ Publishing House\, and three anthologies. Laura recently completed the memoir\, Better Late: The Making of a Midlife First-Time Wife. She teaches memoir writing and has received grants from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. Laura earned her MA in Writing\, Theatre\, and Communication from George Mason University. \n\n

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: A Community of Handweavers – Bridging Tradition and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:  \nAn opening reception celebrating A Community of Handweavers: Bridging Tradition and Innovation by the Weavers Guild of Greater Baltimore (WGGB). \nThe exhibition highlights the enduring role of weaving in American life\, from its roots in early domestic and industrial practices to its place in contemporary artistic expression. As we mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, the show reflects on how textiles have served as both everyday necessities and powerful forms of cultural and political expression—an influence that continues in the work of weavers today. \nMany works draw on historical traditions\, referencing coverlets and overshot patterns while incorporating materials such as cotton\, flax\, natural dyes\, and locally sourced wool. At the same time\, the exhibition emphasizes weaving as an evolving practice\, integrating modern fibers\, tools\, and experimental techniques. \nThrough inspirations ranging from photography to crochet patterns\, and approaches that expand weaving into sculptural and collaborative forms\, the artists demonstrate how tradition and innovation remain deeply connected. Together\, the works present weaving as a living\, adaptive practice shaped by community\, creativity\, and ongoing exploration. \nTo further explore the art of fiber making\, visitors are also invited to join WGGB’s hands-on demonstration\, Hands on the Loom: Exploring Spinning and Weaving Techniques\, offered on October 18 and November 1\, where participants can experience traditional spinning and weaving techniques firsthand. \nThe Weavers Guild of Greater Baltimore is a nonprofit organization dedicated to education and the advancement of weaving and fiber arts. Founded in 1948\, it brings together over 300 members from across the Mid-Atlantic region who connect through monthly meetings\, lectures\, and shared resources\, including an extensive fiber arts library. The Guild also offers workshops\, classes\, a weaving school\, and community programs that support learning\, collaboration\, and public engagement in fiber arts. \nThis exhibition is made possible in part by the Maryland State Arts Council\, the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County\, and Handwork 2026. \nThis exhibition will be on view August 16 – November 18\, 2026.
